We tend to identify scents with feelings and moods. A fleeting smell of rose reminds us of our first love many years back, or a scent of lemon brings back memories of last summer.
That is why we love to bring scents to our homes - whether air fresheners, reed diffusers, scented candles and perfumes, our aim is to provide that pleasant atmosphere. Commercial or homemade, as long as we love the smell, we tend to indulge ourselves.
Nowadays, people are turning to aromatherapy for numerous reasons. For one, we think this is healthy and environment-friendly. But, do we know that behind that innocently scented gadget lies risk? What we breathe in may give us more harm than benefits.
Commercially made oil diffusers generally have ingredients that are summed in one word – fragrance. What is not obvious are the other chemicals mixed with their manufacture. By breathing their fumes, we may encounter a few, or even the worst problems .
- Allergy – Sometimes, sniffing on some essential oils bring us headaches, itching or sneezing. We may not be aware that we experience allergic reactions to the chemicals emitted by the oils. Inhaling or applying topically can bring harmful effects to our body.
- Asthma – It may be safe if we avoid essential oils if we know someone in our family has asthma. Inhaling some essential oils can cause difficulty in breathing. It may be safer if we just stop using essential oils.
- Poison – Accidental ingestion may be harmful, especially commercially-bought oils where the list of ingredients is limited. There are some essential-oil believers who orally take them. This is harmful and even fatal. Wintergreen oil is fatal if swallowed, and can be toxic even to the unborn. Make sure that you do not keep essential oils in the shelf for too long. When using essential oils, be sure to keep your doctor or physician informed.
- Burning, sores and skin discolorations – Some essential oils pose a risk to our sin, so it is important that we know the possible reactions they may cause. Some oils are photosensitizing, such as cumin, lemon, lime and bergamot.
- Risk to pregnant women and babies – Pregnant women should use chemicals with extreme caution, as it may be harmful for herself and the baby in her womb. Extreme care should be done when using them. Babies, on the other hand, are delicate creatures, sensitivity to chemicals are a great possibility. Never use oils on babies under the age of one. It is still best to consult a pediatrician when using products for babies. Pregnant women should avoid the following essential oils, among others: wintergreen, tarragon, mugwort and sage.
- Skin irritation and itching – Who would have thought that a drop of peppermint oil can cause skin irritation? What you thought innocently as a relief for headache has gone worse. To avoid the untoward incident from happening, it is best to test first the chemical before applying to your skin. Apply a small amount on your skin, and it irritation occurs, stop using. It is not good to presuppose that essential oils are natural, and they are safe for use. Some oils can cause skin irritation, including lemongrass, citronella, bay leaf and cinnamon.
- Danger to pets – Your pets are jus like people, they are exposed to danger. Do not use essential oils to pets, especially the small ones. If it cannot be helped, use them under your veterinarian’s supervision. Essential oils can be very harmful and fatal for your pets.
- Harmful effects to pre-existing circumstances – If you have previous disease or illness, use of essential oils may aggravate your condition by simply inhaling or applying them onto your body. Always make it a point to consult your physician when you are to use essential oil, especially on conditions like asthma, heart and skin diseases.
Essential oils can be a helpful tool in managing our health, and it can be a helpful companion in our daily lives. We must, however, keep in mind of the precautions we must take in order to maximize its effectiveness. Studies show the therapeutic effects of these oils, but we must not assume that they are totally safe just because they come from plants and herbs. Though the main ingredients are natural, we cannot just depend on that. Usage of these oils may cause more harm than benefits. So it is better to be safe than sorry
